<div class="MsoNormal">
It takes a certain mindset and discipline if we want to
achieve the happiness and success we want in our lives. We have to become aware
and vigilant with how we approach life and business and realize the power of
our attitudes and choices that shape our reality. Our mindset determines how we
direct our mental, emotional and physical energy in everyday living and deal
with what life throws at us. <o:p></o:p></div>

While there are many success mindsets to master, having
worked with clients in my <a href="https://www.tanyamckey.com/results-coaching/" target="_blank">Results Coaching </a>program and my personal experience,
here are my top 8 mindsets to set you up for entrepreneurial success:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><b><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">1.<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">

<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Creating any kind of change in
life, whether it’s starting a business, changing vocation, embarking a new life
path, or doing anything you haven’t done before, you have to anticipate how
you’re going to do it so that you can plan for it to be successful. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
When you lack planning and don’t
have a frame of reference for what you’re going to experience, it seems foreign
and it may cause confusion and anxiety. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Firstly, your reptilian brain
goes into fight or flight mode - as that’s its main purpose – to protect you
and keep you safe from the unknown. And because it doesn’t know what its
dealing with and you don’t have a frame of reference, when it shows up, you
won’t always know what to do with it. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
It generally starts with an idea,
then a concept, then a vision, and then you start taking action and things
start to happen.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And in that process,
you have to set yourself up to deal with the emotional, physical and mental
changes that may or may not occur. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
In anticipating change, you need
to get real about how that change is going to affect everything in your life –
your money, your energy, your health, your time, your resources and the people
you care about.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>With foresight you can
then plan on how you are going to deal with each aspect, anticipate what kind
of challenges you’ll encounter and have solutions in place that will support
you in getting to where you want to be. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
In making ourselves successful,
we often have to first make space for what we want to come in,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>which means some things (in some cases, a
lot) need to go – this may include people, situations, habits and belief
patterns that hold us back and it can be very challenging letting go of what is
familiar but that we know we can’t take with us.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Through the power of anticipation,
you not only anticipate and prepare for what’s ahead, but when things come up
while you’re going through it, you’ve already equipped yourself with strategies
and coping mechanisms to get through it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><b><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">2.<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span></b><!--[endif]--><b>You have to be hungry for your own
progress.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<b><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Without the hunger and desire to
go after what you want, you’re not really going to get anywhere.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is what is going to fuel you, move you
forward and get you through the challenges you’re going to encounter while
you’re making things happen.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
It’s going to take maintenance,
sustenance, endurance and strength, and you’ve got to be committed to doing
better than you did yesterday and to prepare yourself for whatever that means
because there will be some challenging situations and decisions that are going
to come up on your journey.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Your
self-motivation is going to come from how strong your desire is to have what
you want.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><b><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">3.<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span></b><!--[endif]--><b>The power of association.<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
You are the average of the five
people you hang around.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You really want
to be around people who motivate you to be the best you can be, who support
you, who you can confide in, people who are smarter than you, people who are
more organized than you, who have a better or different skill set than you –
people you can learn from and help you grow.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>You want to be around people who elevate each other, feel joyful, are
energized and are authentic. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
When we’re with people who are
not aligned to our success, we stay stuck, we doubt ourselves, we tend to not
make the best decisions, we keep ourselves small and we consume a lot of energy
in trying to maintain those relationships – energy that could be spent on
expanding our business, doing the things we love and spending it with the
people who actually make us feel good. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
The reality is that we often just
outgrow relationships and while letting go of these relationships can be
painful at times, you have to look at it from a different perspective.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It’s not personal, it’s called growing
(up).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some peoples’ journey will align
with yours as you move forward and others not, and that’s ok. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Association is powerful, because
it incorporates everything you’re associated to.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>What you listen to, what you watch, what you
read, what your share on social media.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Do a quick audit in these areas and assess if you’re surrounding,
listening, watching and sharing information that actually brings value into
your life and those of others, elevates your personal brand and helps you get
closer to what you want to achieve in life.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
If you don’t have access to the
people you really want to associate with, start by reading books, blogs and
podcasts of people who are achieving success already. My personal favorite is
listening to podcasts.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I love that you
can listen to them at anytime, anywhere and you can choose what you want to
listen to. They’re the perfect traffic buster and have become a habit that I’ve
incorporated to keep me motivated and inspired.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
I listen to podcasts of people
who are successful based on my own definition of success, who are on the same
journey as I am, who share their experiences, what they have learnt, what tools
they use and give insights into how they have achieved success in other areas
of their lives.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>My favorite podcasts are
Entrepreneurs on Fire, The Tim Ferris Show, Amy Porterfield, The Lead
Generation and the Mastin Kipp Podcast.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>There are so many amazing people sharing their stories and skills to
help others, it would be worth your while to spend some time in finding those
that resonate with you and learn all you can from them to accelerate your
success in all areas of your life.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>

<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
In order to develop a growth
mindset, you must be prepared to learn - learn about yourself, learn from your
failures, learn from success, learn about your customers, learn about people,
learn technology, learn tools, learn new ways of doing, thinking and
being.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You can’t really move forward if
you’re wanting to hang onto the old way doing things. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
A way of developing a strong
growth mindset is to view the challenges you're encountering from a learning
perspective as opposed to feeling like a victim or not having any options
available to you. This means approaching challenging situations with the
question "What is this teaching me?". This question is really
powerful because it removes the blaming and shaming of the situation and
empowers you to look at the situation more objectively, which in turn, helps
you to think more clearly in coming up with solutions. By taking this approach,
you give yourself permission to be ok with learning as you grow and eliminate
the unnecessary pressure of having to have the answers all of the time.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Another way to develop a growth
mindset is to work with a coach who has expertise in a specific area that you
may need help with. I’ve personally worked with a money coach, a business coach
and a life coach over the last five years because I just didn’t have all the
skills myself and I didn’t know people who could help me get to where I wanted
to be.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>All of the coaches I’ve worked
with advocate self-investment and that you actually need to invest in yourself
to make yourself better – in doing the outer work and the inner work.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Working with someone who you
resonate with and who’s already achieved the success you want is gold and worth
every cent if are willing to learn and apply their teachings.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You automatically expand your perception of
what is available to you and you’ll naturally start attracting like-minded
people that will introduce you to other people, who not only introduce you to
tools and resources that help you get to where you want to be but open you up
to other opportunities.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When you’re open
to learning, you increase your potential and possibilities to expand.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">5.<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]--><b>Habit is destiny.</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
You have to take daily,
consistent and intentional action towards what you want to achieve in life and
in business.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You have to do it
habitually until it becomes automatic.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
We are creatures of habit. We
already have routines that we execute without even thinking about it and where
we want to create change in our lives, we need to accept that it's going to
take some effort in creating success focussed habits.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
The good news is that it only
takes 30 days to implement a new habit and while the initial stages are met
with resistance, once you get into flow with it, do it enough, think and feel
it enough, it becomes involuntary.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This
means that you can create new success focused habits that form routines,
reprogramming how you work and what you spend your energy on so that you drive
your own success.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Ideally you want to have a
morning success ritual that sets you up for the day. You want to feel
emotionally, mentally and physically strong and you want to set yourself up for
maximum productivity so that you get the most results out of your day.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Another important habit to create
is quality rejuvenation - to rest, recharge and refuel. To give yourself time
to replenish improves your energy, clarity and drive.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">6.<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]--><b>Time management vs self management.</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
Unfortunately, we can’t manage
time and we can’t control it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We have to
learn to manage ourselves.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>By managing
ourselves, we take self-responsibility and we avoid projecting our inability to
manage ourselves when we focus on not having enough time. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
This is why creating success
focused habits is essential to us achieving our desires and personal
success.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When we think about how
available and accessible we are to other people, how we indulge in low grade
entertainment such as sensory stimulation, idle gossip, guilty pleasures and
TV, and we use our time to start enjoying the activities that, directly or
indirectly bring us more results,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>we’ll
manage our time better and achieve more.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
I like to focus on high-value
lifetime activities, where I'm either working on my business and marketing
initiatives, or spending time on the things that feed my soul, keep me
connected to the activities and people I love and fuel my cups mentally, emotionally
and physically.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The reality is that if
you’re spending energy on things that don’t align with your high-value lifetime
activities, then you’re really just wasting your time and your energy, and
who's got time for that?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left: 18.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">7.<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">

<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
We live in a culture of instant
gratification.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Everybody wants a quick
fix and while there are many promises made out there, for the important things
in life – like relationships, health and money, there aren’t many and we have
put in the work to get the sustainable and long term results that we want.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">
It’s a continuous process that
requires continuous attention and energy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Your results are going to be dependent on how badly you want it and what
you’re prepared to do to obtain it. To master yourself and achieve what you
want in life and in business, is going to take doing the work.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 18.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">If we want to reach our true potential in life, it’s important our business or <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/job-search-coaching.php" target="_blank">careers </a>are in line with our deepest values. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It’s the only way to achieve our fullest potential and feel a deep sense of fulfilment. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So many of us don’t realize this and it’s a shame. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We go to jobs we hate or run businesses that don’t spark any passion inside of us. We are mostly drawn to the stability of receiving a pay-check or the stability of having something that creates the illusion of stability and will stay comfortable at the expense of our own growth and happiness. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Don’t let that be you. Make it a priority to live authentically … </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">If you want to start a business or transition into a new career, make sure you take inventory of what you value most, and then make sure you let that dictate what to do. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For example, if you want to empower others to lead better, richer lives, then maybe becoming a coach is your calling. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Or if you are really passionate about being fit and healthy, maybe you can start a business that helps others implement strategies to improve their health. Health is one of the three biggest niches people spend their money on. And lots of money.</span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">You may be super conscious of the environment, and perhaps building a business that makes a difference is the way to go, while creating a lifestyle brand for yourself. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">If you are exploring the job market and attending interviews, make sure you are asking the right questions to ensure that you set yourself up in the right organisation that is in alignment with your values and career aspirations. Perhaps the shift is to start presenting your CV as a business proposal. There has to be a mind shift change here if you are prepared to work for someone else and be happy. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We all have something that fires us up. We all have something that we’re really good at and we all have something that somebody else doesn’t have. Turn that something into some form of financial income stream for yourself. Understand what your values are and what is important to you, regardless of whether you are employed or a business owner. When we’re doing the things we love, we tend to expand and opportunity comes to us, our creativity is boosted and we definitely feel happier. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Get a <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/job-search-coaching.php" target="_blank">coach </a>or a mentor to help you put a plan together. Do some research as to the different avenues you can take in creating a business for yourself, there are so many free high-quality resources out there, you just have to dedicate the time to put action into it. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Approaching our “financial” life from this point of view is absolutely critical to our long term fulfillment, happiness, and sense of success and purpose. </span></div>
<div class="line-height-scale-3 font-scale-4 text-align-left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.125; margin-bottom: 1.5em; min-height: 1em; white-space: pre-wrap;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And, it’s the only way we'll ever reach our fullest potential. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU1B7Ww0Drogtp_XQfo6tiYJxG4aD7Xt4CYr-a2d0J0ml9r9DXSl5NCvCq00NlHKEf4x9YJb5F4IrnNqGA-We255-Q1-wsAEp3-a4SsfEVpu09GeeIDqmKlKpVH7c440LpE4vihoOHdksv/s1600/joshua-coleman-717777-unsplash.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU1B7Ww0Drogtp_XQfo6tiYJxG4aD7Xt4CYr-a2d0J0ml9r9DXSl5NCvCq00NlHKEf4x9YJb5F4IrnNqGA-We255-Q1-wsAEp3-a4SsfEVpu09GeeIDqmKlKpVH7c440LpE4vihoOHdksv/s640/joshua-coleman-717777-unsplash.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Interviews can be stressful. Many
people get anxious at the thought of “selling” themselves in an interview.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Sometimes people are so desperate for a job
that they’re so focused on the outcome of getting the job that they fail to
take a step back and look at what they’re really good at, know what they want
or how they can get it and this reflects in the interview, resulting in poor
<a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interview-coaching.php" target="_blank">interview performance</a>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Some
people look good on paper, with great experience and skills, but just don’t
know how to articulate or present themselves in an interview, unclear of where
they are going wrong. And others have not had an interview in years and find the thought of an interview just plain daunting.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><b>Fear </b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">There
are many reasons, but the reality is that we only feel anxious and nervous when
we’re unprepared for the unknown – we’re afraid as we don’t have any control
over a situation we’re about to enter.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> Fear causes anxiety. Fear of not being good enough, fear of not having enough experience, or not having the right experience. Fear of saying the wrong thing. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Many job seekers, despite having the right mix of skills and experience
perform poorly in <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interview-coaching.php" target="_blank">interviews </a>due to being over-stressed, lacking in
self-confidence, have a negative attitude as they approach the interview process.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When you come from a fear-base mentality with
limiting beliefs about yourself or your situation, it almost guarantees poor <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interview-coaching.php" target="_blank">interview performance</a>. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><b>A new perspective</b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">In
order to overcome any <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interview-coaching.php" target="_blank">interview nerves and anxiety</a>, you will need to reframe
both the interview process and your role in the interview process.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Accept that you can’t control the process.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You have no influence over who is
interviewing you and that you have no idea or can do anything about other
candidates that are also been interviewed for the role.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The real secret to overcoming <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/store.php" target="_blank">interview nerves and anxiety</a> is to shift your perspective to yourself.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Realise that the only thing you can control
in the interview is you.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The only thing
you have total control over is yourself and your attitude <i>toward </i>the process.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Think
about it.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Yes, you want the job.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But really, the object of any interview is
that you want to feel that you have presented yourself confidently to an
organisation that you are interested in working for.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You want the interviewer to know exactly what
value you bring to the table and whether there is a good fit from a cultural perspective.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You also want to feel that you were able to
be your authentic self and that your attitude was a true reflection of the type
of person you are.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12pt;">You
want to leave an interview knowing whether there is a good match between what
you want in your career and the role you’ve been interviewed for.</span><span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12pt;">The trick is, really, to release the
attachment to the outcome of getting the job and shift your perspective to
understanding whether the role is right for you and if you want to explore it
further.</span><span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12pt;"><b>Know what you have to offer</b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">We all have unique gifts, experience and skills to
offer the work place. When these are
aligned to our goals and we can position them successfully in an interview, we
position ourselves with confidence and, often, that makes the difference in
taking us to the next level in our careers.
In the interview you need to know your value and be able to demonstrate
it, as well as your potential. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Once you are clear on your value proposition,
answering questions like (even to yourself!) “why should we hire you?”, “what do you bring to an
organisation?”, “why do you think you are the best person for the job?”, “what
is your greatest strength?” or “what is your greatest asset?” is going to be easy to respond to, because
you’ve taken the time to understand your own value and what that means for
an organisation. The premise is that the more value you see in yourself, the more others will too.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12pt; text-align: justify;">Coming from a solid foundation of feeling confident in yourself first, allows you to prepare for an interview from a place of strength and automatically </span><a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/store.php" style="font-family: ebrima; font-size: 12pt; text-align: justify;" target="_blank">reduces interview nerves and anxiety</a><span style="font-family: "ebrima"; font-size: 12pt; text-align: justify;">.</span><br />

It doesn't matter how well you plan in advance, financial year-end always brings on an element of stress. It seems to have a ripple effect through the organization, from the top to the bottom. It's that "Murphy's-Law" time of the year where there is always a surprise along the way - a resignation, system issues, a backlog and let's not forget that it is, after all, business as usual - sales and the day-to-day operations still go on, regardless of reporting pressures and requirements.<br />

Through our experience, it’s been proven time and time again that the lack of a clear talent attraction strategy and an inefficient hiring process can cost you the talent you want, particularly when it comes to <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/permanent_placements.php" target="_blank">senior </a>and <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/permanent_placements.php" target="_blank">specialist recruitment</a>. This is important, not only in hiring <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/permanent_placements.php" target="_blank">specialist skills</a> but also top performers where competition is tough. These individuals also know their worth and are not going to waste their time on lengthy processes where companies can’t make decisions quickly.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Here are our top tips for getting the talent you really want on board – quickly!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Have a clear business strategy </b>– with clear objectives and deliverables. Top talent want to know that there is a clear vision and strategy in place and that it is executable.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Know the skills required to deliver on your business strategy and define key roles</b>. Do you need people on a <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/permanent_placements.php" target="_blank">permanent </a>basis or do you need <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/permanent_placements.php" target="_blank">specialist skills</a> on an <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interim-management.php" target="_blank">interim</a> basis or a mixture of both?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Stop chasing the "perfect person" and hire the "right person"? </b> The perfect candidate is a myth. Look at essential requirements versus nice-to-haves and be willing to flex on requirements for the right attitude and potential. Gems are often lost due to lengthy searches for the "perfect candidate". These individuals are keen to prove themselves, want to learn, have something to prove and generally give more. The “perfect” candidate is often harder to retain, is going to want “more” sooner than later and creates all sorts of expectations that could lead to disappointment. Aim for 75% fit – this allows for growth and opportunity for both parties and know that there's got to be something in it for them.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Define your resourcing strategy</b> to attract the talent you want by ensuring you have a strong value proposition, that you can afford the talent you want, are realistic around market conditions and have an efficient engagement process in place. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Create a sense of urgency with all stakeholders involved in the process. </b> Top talent is not attracted to lengthy processes and they can lose interest quickly. Having to salvage or constantly keep somebody interested in your business takes time and energy and you may lose them based purely on that.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Whether you’re doing <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/permanent_placements.php" target="_blank">permanent recruitment</a> or needing an <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interim-management.php" target="_blank">interim manager</a>, work with a trusted <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/" target="_blank">recruitment partner</a> – in true partnership. </b> In essence, your <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/" target="_blank">recruitment partner</a> is representing your organization in the market place. Be prepared to spend time with them to understand your business – business drivers, business objectives, key players, the role and culture. Give your <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/" target="_blank">recruitment partner</a>, whether internally or externally, access to decision makers. There is nothing worse than engaging with the market and you haven’t even met the decision makers. By doing this, it shows that your organization is serious about hiring and everybody is on the same page.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In a partnership, your recruitment partner will provide you with better service, advise you on market insights that can assist you in attracting the right talent for your business and most importantly, prioritize you as a client. Should you work with recruiters based on fees and speed, I can almost guarantee that the quality hires you make are more luck based. And your company will be prioritized accordingly. Taking a gun-shot approach by working with many recruiters can impact your brand, especially when it comes to <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/permanent_placements.php" target="_blank">senior </a>and <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/permanent_placements.php" target="_blank">specialist recruitment</a>.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Be transparent and realistic with all involved in the process – stakeholders, <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/" target="_blank">recruitment partners </a>and candidates.</b> Be prepared to give the good, the bad and the ugly. Business is constantly changing, and change is an opportunity for growth and learning. The cost of losing great candidates is not worth withholding or not being straight up with people in the interview process, specifically when it comes to challenging aspects of the role. If there’s restructuring or downscaling on the cards – share that. If systems are having an impact on business performance, let them know. Share how you are dealing with or plan to deal with these challenges so that they feel some level of comfort that they are not walking into a s*&^* storm, no matter how temporary. Tell them about some of the exciting things happening in the business - it doesn't have to be all covert. Candidates don’t want to feel that they’ve taken on something that wasn’t fully disclosed in the interview process. This will just leave a bad taste in their mouth - and mouths talk, which will have a direct impact on your brand. People want challenges and perform better when they can anticipate challenges ahead of them as well as know there are good things on the cards that they can be part of. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<b>Make them want to work for you. </b> When they have made up their minds to work for you the risk of counter offers is significantly reduced, resignations are handled more easily and they're on board before they've even started.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We are a people business and therefore connecting people and building relationships is critical to the success or our business. We strive to deliver exceptional services and make a difference in the lives of both our clients and candidates. We would welcome the opportunity to connect with you to assess whether we’re the right recruitment partner for you.<o:p></o:p></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Are you struggling in the interview process? Does the thought of an interview stress you out? Do you feel that you possess all the skills and knowledge to perform in a role, however, you bomb out in the interview process? You never get called back for a second interview and nobody tells you why? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Here are 7 ways you could be getting in your own way.<br />
<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <b><span style="text-indent: -24px;">1. Yo</span><span style="text-indent: -24px;">u </span><span style="text-indent: -18pt;">put yourself in a lower position to the interviewer</span></b><br />
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
Know your worth! As much as you are looking for a new position, the company you are interviewing with is also looking for the right person. You are looking and so are they. Equal the playing fields by presenting yourself in a confident manner that shows you know what value you bring to an organisation. If you don’t see it, neither will they.</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><b>2. You oversell yourself</b></span><br />
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<b><o:p></o:p></b></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
You may not even be conscious that you do this, and often it's because you are nervous. This often comes with endless talking about yourself and how good you are. You hardly take the time to listen to what is actually being asked of you or fail to ask relevant questions that show a genuine interest in understanding the role or the business objectives. You can be viewed as either arrogant or desperate – neither leave a positive impression. Here <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interview-coaching.php" target="_blank">interview coaching </a>can really pay off, as you will get constructive feedback, from an objective point of view, on how to handle yourself in the interview.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <b><span style="text-indent: -24px;">3. Yo</span><span style="text-indent: -18pt;">u are vague in demonstrating your capabilities and achievements</span></b><br />
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
The biggest mistake you can make is to assume that people know how you do what you do. If you can’t provide context and make it relevant to the role you are being interviewed for, you are not going to be shortlisted to go to the next level. Here your <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interview-coaching.php" target="_blank">interviewing skills</a> are critical in making sure your interviewer understands your abilities and your value.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><b>4. You fail to ask the right questions</b></span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
The interview process swings between being interviewed and you doing the interviewing – after all, you are also looking to see if the role and organisation is a good fit for you, right? Know your worth, know strengths, know your not-so-good skills, know where you add value and know your "deal-breakers". Work on your own <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interview-coaching.php" target="_blank">interviewing skills</a>. If you are not asking questions that address all of these key aspects, you are potentially setting yourself up for unpleasant surprises. You have to take responsibility for your participation in the interview process.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><b>5. You lack self-awareness</b></span><br />

<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
You have gone for a number of interviews and are failing to get the role you want or are just not being called back after the first interview. Consider that there may be a problem in how you are presenting yourself. Is there alignment with your CV and your personal presentation? If you are being called for an interview, something in your CV has caught the interviewers attention. If you are failing in the interview, there is a misalignment in some way or form. You either need to improve your <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interview-coaching.php" target="_blank">interview skills</a> or you are misrepresenting yourself in your CV. You need to get honest feedback and be open to changing how you present yourself, both on paper and in person.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><b>6. You have difficulty answering sensitive questions</b></span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<div class="MsoListParagraph" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -18.0pt;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
Here’s a couple of scenarios: You have a jumpy work history, you have been dismissed, you have been retrenched, or you have left an organisation on not-so-good terms. You may have an issue with an organisation that is in direct conflict with your values and ethics. You have to be clear in your mind about what it is and what strategy you will take in addressing these questions. These discussions cannot dominate the interview. You need to nip it in the bud and focus on your value proposition.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
<span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><br /></span> <span style="text-indent: -18pt;"><b>7. You focus on negative work experience or have negative reasons for your unemployment</b></span><br />

<o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle">
No matter how negative a work or no-work experience is, you need to demonstrate that you gained something positive out of the experience. Good organisations will not want any negativity in their organisation. These people are known as blamers, shamers and complainers – it would be wise to avoid portraying any negativity in the interview. People tend to remember the negative aspects more than the positive, so be conscious of how people may be perceiving you.<o:p></o:p><br />

The bottom line is that it is a very competitive market out there. This is where <a href="http://www.tdtandassociates.co.za/interview-coaching.php" target="_blank">interview preparation</a> really pays off. If you don’t, it is guaranteed that somebody else will. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: 'Playfair Display', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Every time you've been for an interview you’re selling yourself. You're selling your skills, experience, attitude and your looks (sometimes). See yourself as a product. What are you selling? You aren't just going in there to discuss your career, you're there to see how YOU can help THEM<br />
<br />
It's not about how many years experience you have or your education background. While that is all important. Its ultimately not what gets you the job. There are many, many, many people out there with some version of your experience and qualification. Just think about how many people graduated last year in your field.<br />
<br />
So, in order to make you memorable in your interview, what do you need to do? SELL!<br />
<br />
How are you a product? Let's see here... I am going to compare you and your career to a simple mass produced product - Excuse the brashness of that statement (I know you aren't a mass produced product!) Ask yourself these questions: (I will use environmental practitioners as an example). Remember this takes considerable preparation before your interview.<br />
<br />
<b style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">What is my title (Product name):</b> 'Environmentalist' or more aptly named: Environmental Practitioner<br />
<b style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br /></b>
<b style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">What are my features (Product Features):</b> I have a Masters Degree in Environmental Science from the University of Johannesburg. I have seven years experience in the environmental field. My experience includes infrastructure project, mining, commercial and Capital projects. (This is the part where they ask you about your experience with reference to specific projects)<br />
<b style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br /></b>
<b style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">What advantages to I have over the other candidates? (Advantages of the Product): </b>This is the advantage your potential employer will gain from all of your features (discussed above). How will your Masters degree be an advantage. Explain this to the interviewer. Help them to see the link. You can say something like "I have a Master degree in Environmental Science, which means I have a good idea how to conduct research and write detailed reports." or you could say "I've worked on mining and infrastructure as well as Capital projects, which means that I am comfortable with large projects and working with big teams of experienced professionals." Showing the interviewer the link here is important because a good salesperson never assumes that their prospect will come to a conclusion on their own. BUT they also don’t imply that their prospect is ignorant or stupid. It's all about CLEAR communication.<br />
<b style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br /></b>
<b style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">What benefits could you offer the company? (Product Benefits):</b> Here you bring in the benefits that your advantages would have for the company. So the advantage of being comfortable working on large scale projects with big professional teams will provide the benefit that you can keep calm under pressure and maintain quality of work no matter how large the responsibility or how intimidating the team or project scale. Other benefits could also include being able to perform under pressure with teams of people from different backgrounds and being able to communicate with everyone in your team from all places in the a hierarchy.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: 'Playfair Display', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<b style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">What is your Grabber?</b> The most important part of the interview is the questions you ask. Not the answers you give. Many people think the opposite is true. The interviewer wants to know that you have given critical thought to their company and the work they do. So once you have satisfied all of their answers and allowed them to feel as though they can trust you. You hit them with questions. Always bring the questions back to you benefits and advantages. For instance, "As you know I have worked on large scale projects, will there be opportunity for me to contribute to something of a similar scale?" OR "As I am very comfortable with report writing and research, how much of it will I be doing and would I be supervising any staff in this task?" These types of questions, give the impression that you are thinking about the job in terms of what you can offer as well as trying to understand the needs of the company. This is a very powerful approach in an interview, because you allow the potential employer to talk about their concerns and challenges and it also gives you an opportunity to see where any skills that have not yet been discussed can be of service to the interviewer.<br />
<br />
Now, this might all sound like manipulation. I know in your scientific brain you're saying: "Why should I trick them into hiring me? That sounds fake and they will see right through me. I don't know how to sell anything, I'm not a salesperson, I'm a scientist/engineer!"</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: 'Playfair Display', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Yes... I do understand how you feel. I was once where you are. But I must reassure you that it's not manipulation in any way. You are simply making a wonderfully persuasive flow diagram in the mind of the interviewer. All you are doing is linking important points in the flow diagram that represents your product (<i style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">The Professional You</i>) for them to see it more clearly in relation to what they need. You're just making it easier for them to make a decision. Of course you must not lie because that is not sales, it's dishonesty.<br />

<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
So, you're a Project Manager. You deal with deadlines, teams, sometimes difficult team members, budgets, planning, execution, checking!</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Firstly, this is not some how-to or technique'd approach to Project Management. I am not interested in the tools that Project Managers use or the techniques to systematise project management outcomes. This is a look at the soft skills necessary to get people on your side of the table. Same side of the table = project success.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
How do you get the most out of your project team with the least resistance? You obviously want the most streamlined approach to successfully completing your project to your (and your clients) satisfaction.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Managing a project can be taxing at times. Especially when you look at that giant Gantt chart looming over your desk or board room table. Let's chat about how to move into a place where you smoothly get results.</div>
<ol style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0.5em 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px 0px 0px 2em;">
<li style="margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px;"><b>80-20 Rule for Getting Results</b></li>
</ol>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
At university I had a friend who never studied, he partied hard and always seemed relaxed about classes and semester tests. Even though his marks were always in the top 15% of the class (in the sciences). His motto was "Minimum input - Maximum Output". We all envied him for his natural ability to get things done well with minimal effort. He seemed to operate on about 10% of his available brain power, but get the best results every time!</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Years later, I now understand what he was doing! He applied the Pareto Principle to everything he did. Now, you might be thinking, "oh, another article about the 80-20 rule - BORING". Well, not actually. I think this might surprise you...</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
How does the Pareto Principle (80-20 rule) apply to motivating your team to get into action? I'll tell you how.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Now, don't take my word for it... try this out for yourself. I'm all about experiential learning.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Anyway, here's how it works. You just need to simplify your approach. Think about the actions you can take to wittle away the 80% of what you are doing with your team that are not working. You can apply the "Stop.Start.Continue" assessment to your project management inputs. This way your most valuable and important inputs will maximise your output. This is how you apply the assessment to your work:</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Ask yourself what you should stop doing with your team. Like, stop sending daily follow up emails. These may distract and stress team members. Then ask yourself what you should start doing? Possibly, start asking for public (witnessed by other team members) commitments by team members to desired outcomes. To create accountability. And lastly, what should you continue to do? This might be to continue to check on progress and provide praise or support where needed. In this way, you can cut away unnecessary inputs and maximise the outputs.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
<b>2. Communicate in Terms of the Highest Values of your Team Members</b></div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Even though your job is to manage a project, it's important to remember that you are not a task master, dishing out tasks and demanding results. To be truly effective, you should be there to influence the decisions and behaviour of your team relative to the project at hand. It's about influence, not dictatorship.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
People respond positively to positive reinforcement. Now, I'm not telling you to be a People Pleaser, Mr Nice PM. No. You just need to tailor your message to your audience. Meaning, if you're dealing with an architect who is responsible for the next as-built drawing for the project to move forward OR a data manager finalising a CRM tool, make sure that your message to them speaks to what they value most.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
In the case of the architect, try to find out what it is that they are doing. Ask them about their process and what they think is their most valuable input. Find out what other projects they are working on that excites or inspires them. You might find that the as-built for your project is delayed because they are more enthused about a social architecture project that helps disadvantaged communities. Once you have this information, find the links between your project and the one they find most inspiring.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
3. <b>Create Accountability in Your Project Team</b></div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Studies have shown that the delineation of responsibilities is more effective when the person delegating tasks gets buy-in from the person responsible for that task, even in the smallest form. The buy-in usually creates a sense of accountability, as team members confirm their involvement, instead of being directed to carry out a task. How do you do this?</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
You can do this by asking questions. Questions are the best way to get anything moving forward. In my mind, there are primary questions to get real buy-in and then secondary questions to confirm a request. A primary questions allows for the other person to demonstrate authority in their chosen field, to provide a professional opinion or to feel as though they are being consulted with on an important matter. It shows them that you take them seriously as a part of the team. Secondary questions confirm your trust in their opinion and their ability to see a task through. You are allowing them to give their thoughts on the matter and then to confirm accountability for their authority on the subject. Let's try them together...</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
<b>Primary Question:</b> " Do you agree that this is our number one priority?" "How do you think we can tackle this from your perspective?" <b>Secondary Question: </b>"Can you give us an outcome by next week Tuesday based on what we have just discussed?"</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Do you see how, we first acknowledged their authority, thereby imposing accountability on their answers and then confirmed their competence to achieve the desired outcome. They feel valued as professionals and feel as though they are being given a voice, but because of this, they are more accountable to the team because you've linked their ability to perform to their authority in their field of specialisation. It's a win-win. Your influence is driven by their buy-in to what you need for the project.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px 0px 24px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
I'm sure that what I have described does sound like a very tedious thing to have to do for most of you. But if you want to influence with power and poise, you will have to slow it down and manage your team by enhancing your soft skills. Anyway, there can be no team without co-operation.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Please note that I am speaking from experience, everything I say is based on what has worked for me. I like to think of myself as astutely tuned into how people respond within a team environment and how to maximise their contribution to a team. But I don't claim to know everything, either. So, if something else works for you, I'd be very happy to hear about it in the comments. We're all here to learn.</div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
